About Piedmont Veterinary Service
In 1990, I, Dr. Chris Grover, took over Piedmont Veterinary Service (PVS), a farm animal veterinary practice. In 1994, I repurposed the Old Keene Store, a turn of the century former inn, into an animal hospital. Karen Degiorgis, D.V.M and Lara West, L.V.T. joined me and we became a mixed animal practice. The southern Albemarle community and surrounding areas welcomed us with open arms. We have been proud to be an integral part of this community ever since.
Anne Walker, our office manager, and Heather Kirby, our senior assistant have been with us over two decades. Veterinary medicine has changed through the years and we have grown with it. As our small animal practice became increasingly busy, we gave up the farm animal work. One thing that has remained consistent over the years, however, is our commitment to keep the clinic grounded in family practice values and responsive to local needs. We greatly appreciate the continued support of this wonderful community.
Hospital Policies:
We do require that all dogs and cats that come to us have a current rabies vaccine. It is the law and protects our staff in the event of a bite.
We require that all animals admitted to the hospital also have a current distemper/parvo vaccine given by a veterinarian. This is to protect both your pet from exposure while here, and to protect other pets that might be exposed to yours.
New Puppy/Kitten Appointments
Puppies should start well-checks with distemper/parvo vaccines at 6-8 weeks of age. Kittens should start distemper vaccines at 8 weeks of age. The vaccines are only effective for about 30 days in puppies and kittens, necessitating monthly well-checks and boosters until 4 months of age. Puppies and kittens should be kept away from unvaccinated animals they are fully vaccinated. Rabies vaccines are given at 4 months of age. Most puppies and kittens have parasites! We will need a fecal sample to check for those. Additional tests and vaccines may be recommended depending on your pet’s circumstances.
